About Me

Hello, my name is Sammy Shan and welcome to Data Point! I am a data junkie and long-time ex-googler, and am passionate about solving complex problems together with interesting people. I have no idea how it happened, but 14 years is how long I worked at Google. After leaving Google in early 2024, I decided to start a coaching firm to help individuals and businesses succeed by offering my advice in data, analytics and finance.

I have been extremely fortunate and grateful for my experience at Google. In the first 12 years there, I succeeded in various data and finance roles and grew from a junior analyst to a senior leader. I have tackled interesting problems in Product, Marketing, Sales, and Finance with a data lens. I built a product analytics and data science team in Google Payments, set up the marketing analytics and consumer research function for Google’s Platforms & Ecosystems products, led the global finance team for Small and Medium Business Marketing, and owned everything Finance for Niantic when it was a startup inside Google. The journey was thrilling and rewarding as I moved from one puzzle to the next with smart, kind, and driven coworkers at all levels.

I spent my last two Google years in Corporate Engineering leading a data engineering team. Though this experience was so unique and hit me really hard in many ways, it taught me a precious yet different kind of lesson. I learnt that when extreme circumstances occur, tough problems become much simpler as long as I always hang on to who I am as a person. I am thankful to all the colleagues who helped me realize what is important to me.

After I caught my breath from a truly wild roller coaster ride, I decided to translate everything I learnt – the great, the good, the bad, and the ugly – into something positive. I look forward to connecting with new and old friends and to helping those who may use my help to realize their potential. What I can provide is simply a data point, but sometimes one data point could change the whole picture.
